PCHS & Sun Youth

On Thursday, November 27, 2014, thirty-five PCHS IB students, Santa hats in tow, headed down to Sun Youth on their PED day to be part of a great cause.

Mr. Tondino, a retired PCHS teacher heavily involved with the Sun Youth organization, needed some “elves” to assist with Sun Youth’s gift inventory and our students answered the call!

Demonstrating creative thinking, teamwork and true holiday spirit, PCHS students sorted, stacked, wrapped, and organized hundreds of gifts that will be distributed as part of Sun Youth’s food basket campaign.

Thank you to Mr. Tondino for the invitation and to Mr. Garcia, Ms. Fournier and Ms. Yannakis for accompanying the students. Above all, the biggest thank you goes out to the student volunteers that gave up their time for more than just wrapping presents. Because of their efforts, they have ensured that other kids in their own community will have a happy holiday.

PCHS Shines at the SciTech Event

Last week was the 2014 SciTech event which was held at the Lester B. Pearson School Board. Various schools each chose two science projects to be presented in the boardroom for any teachers, parents and/or members of the board who attended.

PCHS participated during the science event with two projects from secondary 2 and secondary 5. Arielle Cormier and Jordan Khalilifar, from secondary two, confidently explained the construction and functionality of a Sluice gate (a sliding gate that controls water levels). Shenica Wickham-Codogan and Alessia Kapsch took the circulating observers by storm with their vast understanding of the secondary 5 psychology taste-test project (taste differs depending whether food can be seen or not).

Our PCHS students were able to answer any and all questions that came their way, and displayed great knowledge on their respective scientific topics, so much so that the chairperson of the board mentioned our school in her closing remarks!

Well done PCHS, the science department was well represented!!!

PCHS Student Jeffrey Gordon

At 6',3”, Jeffrey Gordon stands out from most of his fellow students at Pierrefonds Comprehensive High School.

But it’s not just height that makes Jeffrey stand out – not only is the 17-year-old a good student, he’s also a good hockey player.

And to make that happen, Jeffrey, now in grade 10, moved to Pierrefonds from Kujjuaq two years ago to pursue his studies and hopefully, one day, a hockey career.

“Kujjuaq is really a small town and you know almost everybody, which I kind of miss,” Jeffrey said of his hometown which, with a population of just under 2,500 people, is the largest village in Nunavik.

"But I’ve always felt welcome at PCHS,” he added. “Everyone here has been really helpful and I think I’ve grown up a lot – moving to Montreal has made me more independent.”

PCHS Principal Cristina Prata said that Jeffery has adapted very well to his new home.

“Jeffrey has been with us for two years now and he is doing extremely well, both on the ice as well as academically,” she said.

Jeffrey will soon be acting as an ambassador of sorts when 16 boys from Kujjuaq, all young hockey players, visit PCHS to see if they too want to follow in his footsteps.

“I'm really excited for them, it’s a great opportunity,” said Jeffrey. “It has opened doors for me.”

The boys will have lunch at the school on March 19 and then play an exhibition game against the PCHS Trojans, at the nearby 4 Glaces Arena at 4 p.m.

Dan Nathan, PCHS English teacher and Athletics Director said Jeffrey’s experience at PCHS  - he is looking at the possibility of hockey scholarships at the college level - may entice some other players to do the same.

"It has been great getting to know Jeffrey – he quickly became part of the PCHS family,” said Nathan. “We can’t wait to meet the team from Kujjuaq and allow them to see for themselves how positive an experience this has been for everyone involved.”
